About This Location
Mahia Road runs through a residential stretch of Wattle Downs with a school and childcare centres along it, and feeds into the busy Weymouth/Roscommon/Palmers Road roundabout at its northern end. That roundabout alone recorded 50 crashes in five years, including one fatality. Independent traffic experts flagged this stretch as a high crash risk area with a history of fatal and injury crashes, and the camera pole went up in September 2017 as part of the $10 million national speed camera expansion. It's one of five cameras installed across the Counties Manukau Police District during that rollout. The wider Manurewa area has some of the worst serious injury and death rates on Auckland roads, and Auckland Transport has since poured resources into the neighbourhood with over 250 speed humps on surrounding streets. About 85% of vehicles approaching the nearby roundabout travel at 50 to 60km/h, which locals say is too fast for an area where families are walking to school and shops daily.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
