NZ Speed Camera Map is built and maintained by Bradley Windybank, a software engineer and data analyst with an interest in speed camera enforcement, crash statistics, and road safety policy since 2024.

This project combines automated data collection from official government sources with original analysis and research to provide New Zealand drivers with accurate, up-to-date information about fixed speed camera locations. Every article on this site is researched and fact-checked against official sources including Waka Kotahi NZTA, the Ministry of Transport, and NZ Police.

Our Mission

NZ Speed Camera Map provides New Zealand drivers with accurate, up-to-date information about fixed speed camera locations across the country. Our goal is to promote road safety awareness and help drivers stay informed about speed enforcement areas.

Our Editorial Process

We take accuracy seriously. Here is how content on this site is produced:

  • Camera data is sourced directly from Waka Kotahi NZTA and updated automatically every week.
  • Blog articles are researched using official government publications, academic research, and verified news sources.
  • Statistics are cited with links to original sources so readers can verify the data themselves.
  • Fact-checking is performed against official sources before publication. Where information cannot be independently verified, this is noted.

If you spot an error in any of our content, please get in touch so we can correct it.

Data Source

All speed camera location data is sourced directly from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA), the official government agency responsible for road safety and transport infrastructure in New Zealand.

This data is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. The camera location data has been reformatted for interactive map display, but the core location, type, and address information remains unchanged from the original NZTA source.

Data Accuracy

Our database is automatically updated weekly from the official NZTA source. This automated process ensures that:

  • New camera locations are added promptly
  • Removed or relocated cameras are updated
  • Camera type information remains current
  • Geographic coordinates are verified for accuracy

Camera Types Explained

Spot Speed Cameras (61 in NZ)
Measure your instantaneous speed at a single point. If you exceed the speed limit at the camera location, you may receive an infringement.
Red Light Cameras (36 in NZ)
Detect vehicles that enter an intersection after the traffic light has turned red. Many also function as speed cameras.
Average Speed Cameras (6 in NZ)
Calculate your average speed over a distance by recording your vehicle at two or more points. Also known as point-to-point cameras.

Cameras by Region

Speed cameras are distributed across 10 regions in New Zealand:

Road Safety

Speed cameras are an important part of New Zealand's road safety strategy. Research shows that speed cameras reduce crashes and save lives. We encourage all drivers to:

  • Always drive within the posted speed limit
  • Adjust speed for road and weather conditions
  • Stay alert and focused while driving
  • Use this map for awareness, not to evade enforcement
