About This Location

This camera sits on the rural stretch of Waiuku Road near Mauku, roughly a kilometre from the Colombo Road intersection, facing traffic heading towards Pukekohe. It's part of a batch of cameras installed across the Franklin area in 2023 under the Road to Zero programme, placed at sites identified as having a high crash risk and a history of fatal and injury crashes. The speed limit along here was dropped from 100km/h to 80km/h around 2020, and that change made the Franklin cameras deeply unpopular with locals. Three cameras in the area were vandalised in 2024, with stands pushed over and one appearing to have been shot with a firearm. One Waiuku local told Newshub "you could round up every motorist who lives in the region and they would all stick their hand up and claim it was them." Waze users note the camera is positioned behind steel barriers on the roadside.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
