About This Location
Waitakere Road runs through Taupaki, a rural-lifestyle pocket of west Auckland on the way out toward Bethells Beach. It's a country road with bends and limited visibility in places, and drivers haven't always respected that. Before the camera went in, Waka Kotahi recorded vehicles doing 30 to 60 percent over the 80 km/h limit at this location. A fatal two-vehicle crash on the road in September 2018 killed one person and left another with moderate injuries, and a serious crash at the Taupaki Road intersection in February 2019 sent two people to Auckland Hospital. Auckland Transport has since flagged that intersection as high risk with a pattern of loss-of-control crashes, and they're adding skid-resistant surfacing and red "SLOW" road markings to try and fix it. The camera itself is an NK-7 unit installed in mid-2023 as one of nine new fixed cameras rolled out across Auckland under the Road to Zero strategy.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
