About This Location
Sitting at the Waihi end of the Karangahake Gorge, this camera went live in April 2018 and almost immediately became one of the busiest in the country. In its first three months, it caught 9,741 drivers speeding through the 80 km/h zone, and in June alone it racked up 5,388 tickets and over $500,000 in fines, making it New Zealand's second most active fixed camera behind only Waitemata. The operator of the Waikino Hotel said there was some "foot stomping" from locals when it was installed, since it sits close to where the limit drops from 100 to 80 km/h and drivers don't always adjust in time. But the camera's there for good reason. Over a ten-year period, the SH2 stretch between Paeroa and Waihi claimed five lives and left 36 people seriously injured. The gorge road is winding and narrow, with tourist foot traffic from the popular walking tracks spilling across the highway. Local business owners have described watching people cross with kids and pushbikes while cars fly past, calling it "heart stopping." Speed limits through the gorge have since been lowered further after NZTA consultation.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
