About This Location
SH2 through Waihi sits on the main Auckland-to-Tauranga corridor, and this stretch has a grim track record. Five people died and 36 were seriously injured on SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi over a ten-year period, which is a big part of why this camera went in as one of seven new Waikato highway cameras announced in 2017. It's been busy since. From 2019 to 2023, the camera pulled in $9.5 million in fines, making it the fifth highest-grossing fixed speed camera in the country. The nearby Waikino camera at the Karangahake Gorge entrance is even busier, catching 9,741 speeders in its first three months alone. In late 2025, Waka Kotahi dropped the speed limit on parts of SH2 through Waihi from 100 km/h and 70 km/h down to 60 km/h, after a public consultation where locals flagged heavy traffic and trailer movements near the Dean Crescent intersection.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
