About This Location
Otorohanga Road is the local name for the stretch of State Highway 3 running between Te Awamutu and Otorohanga, a two-lane rural highway that NZTA has classified as high risk. Between 2006 and 2015, three people died and 23 were seriously injured along this corridor, mostly from head-on collisions and drivers running off the road into trees and power poles. The camera was one of seven installed across Waikato's highways in 2017 as part of a $10 million national expansion targeting the country's worst crash zones. Wire rope barriers and widened centre lines have since been added to reduce head-ons, but serious crashes keep happening. In June 2022, two people died in a single-vehicle crash on this road. And in September 2024, three more were injured when a truck and car collided near Otorohanga. It's a fast, straight stretch that catches drivers off guard, especially around intersections and access ways.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
