About This Location
The stretch of SH56 in Tiakitahuna runs through flat Manawatu farmland at 100 km/h, with power poles, large trees, and deep drainage ditches lining the road. It's a stretch with a rough track record. Between 2017 and 2021, the SH56 corridor between Palmerston North and Opiki saw over 100 crashes and five deaths. Tiakitahuna itself has been the scene of multiple serious incidents, including a fatal single-vehicle crash in 2022 and two separate crashes at the same intersection within hours of each other in 2020. The camera went live in November 2018 as one of 33 new fixed cameras placed at locations selected by independent crash risk analysis.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Manawatū-Whanganui region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
