About This Location
This camera sits on the Wellington Urban Motorway next to the Thorndon on-ramp, near the Molesworth Street overbridge, on a stretch of the 1,335-metre Thorndon Overbridge. An old wet-film camera operated here for close to 20 years before being replaced by a digital unit in November 2014, one of the first 12 new-generation cameras installed nationwide as part of a $10 million upgrade targeting high-risk crash zones. The site was chosen after independent analysis of 10 years of crash data flagged it as a problem area. In 2016, this section became New Zealand's first smart motorway, with variable speed limits that shift anywhere from 30 to 100 km/h depending on traffic conditions.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Wellington region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
