About This Location
Between 2010 and 2019, 18 people died and 66 were seriously injured on the SH29 corridor from Te Poi to Tauranga, putting it in the top 10% of roads nationally where speed management would have the biggest impact. The camera was announced in May 2017 as one of 33 new sites at locations NZTA identified as "known black spots" based on crash history. Crashes haven't stopped. A motorcyclist was killed on Te Poi Road near the SH29 intersection in May 2024, and a single-vehicle crash on this stretch in January 2026 was also fatal. Community concern about speeds through the settlement led Waka Kotahi to hold a speed review consultation at Te Poi School Hall in late 2021, with locals raising worries about children walking and cycling to school along the highway.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
