About This Location
This intersection sits right in the heart of Otara, close to the town centre, and it's long had a reputation for collisions. Auckland Libraries' records show a three-car crash at this exact corner as far back as 1970, when a truck ran through the intersection and sent a Morris Minor driver flying from her seat. In October 2017, police spotted a stolen vehicle here and gave chase down Bairds Road, where the car hit a tree at around 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, killing the 15-year-old driver. Auckland Transport has since poured resources into safety upgrades along Bairds Road between East Tamaki Road and Alexander Crescent, adding speed tables, pedestrian islands, and a new roundabout to slow traffic in what they describe as a stretch with "quite a few accidents." It's a busy corridor with heavy foot traffic from nearby schools and medical centres, so the red light camera here isn't surprising.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
