About This Location
This camera on Murphys Road was one of Auckland's first two digital speed cameras, going live in December 2014 alongside a second unit on nearby Mill Road. Both were part of a $10 million national rollout of 56 new-generation cameras using dual radar technology capable of monitoring up to six lanes in both directions. Police chose the site after analysing 10 years of crash data, which flagged this stretch as having a pattern of speed-related crashes. The road was originally 80 km/h but has since been lowered to 60 km/h under Auckland Transport's Safe Speeds programme, as the surrounding area has rapidly transformed from farmland into high-density housing through the Flat Bush and Ormiston developments. When police consulted nearby residents and businesses before installation, they reported no objections. Locals were, in their words, "delighted that something is being done about speeding traffic."

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
