About This Location
Great South Road is one of New Zealand's oldest roads, originally built by British soldiers in the 1840s and now a four-lane arterial carrying a heavy mix of cars, trucks, and buses through Otahuhu. This camera started life as a wet film unit and was one of the first in Auckland upgraded to digital technology, going live in its new form around late 2014 as part of a $10 million national rollout targeting high-risk crash sites. The site was picked after independent analysis of 10 years of crash data, and the area's record backs that up. In May 2023, a two-car collision here killed one person and critically injured three others, with a witness reporting one vehicle doing around 100 km/h. A pedestrian was also seriously hurt at the nearby Mangere Road intersection in April 2025. The broader Mangere-Otahuhu area saw a 44% jump in deaths and serious injuries between 2014 and 2018, which prompted Auckland Transport to drop the town centre speed limit to 30 km/h. Outside that zone, the road sits at 50 km/h, but the wide, straight lanes can make it feel faster than it is.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
