About This Location
Moorhouse Ave is one of Christchurch's busiest corridors, carrying around 24,000 vehicles a day, and this intersection with Manchester Street and Pilgrim Place had racked up over 100 crashes according to Waka Kotahi data before the camera went live in April 2022. It was one of the first two red light cameras in the South Island to actually issue fines. A 2018 survey across 15 Christchurch intersections found drivers ran red lights 8,170 times in a single 24-hour period, which helped build the case for enforcement here. Interestingly, by 2024 neither of the two Moorhouse Ave camera sites featured in the city's top 15 for detected red light violations, suggesting the cameras are doing their job as a deterrent. Traffic volumes at this end of Moorhouse Ave are only expected to grow with the new One New Zealand Stadium (Te Kaha) opening nearby and thousands of Ara Institute students passing through daily.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Canterbury region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
