About This Location
Leeston Road runs through Springston on the flat Canterbury Plains, connecting the small town to Leeston further south. It's a rural road that passes right by Springston School, where kids regularly get on and off school buses. The road has a grim history. In January 2018, a man escaped a rolled car near Goulds Road only to be struck and killed by another vehicle while standing on the roadside. And in February 2026, 10-year-old Alexander Bennett was hit and killed by a car while walking along the road after school. Locals have raised repeated concerns about drivers ignoring the 30kph school zone signs. One parent told RNZ he stood watching one morning and "couldn't believe" people were still speeding past the school the day after the child's death. The camera went live in April 2018 as part of the Police's $10 million static camera expansion, placed here after independent traffic experts flagged the stretch as high-risk for crashes.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Canterbury region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
