About This Location
Southland's only fixed speed camera sits on Otatara Road near Invercargill Airport, and it's probably best known for the 2021 fiasco that made national news. When the Invercargill City Council temporarily dropped the speed limit from 100 km/h to 70 km/h to manage detour traffic during the Stead Street stopbank upgrade, the camera went on a tear. Over 8,500 tickets were issued in under two months, up from just 281 in the previous six months. One local business owner copped 15 tickets, and his employees racked up around $2,500 in fines between them. But it turned out the temporary speed limit had been set up wrong (it was only supposed to apply during certain hours, not around the clock), so every single ticket from that period was cancelled and refunded. Even without the drama, the camera stays busy. Between January and September 2024, it clocked 4,078 speeders, making it the second most active fixed camera in the Southern police district.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Southland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
