About This Location

King Edward Street is the main shopping strip through South Dunedin, a busy arterial route linking the city centre with the coastal suburb of St Kilda. The camera sits at the northern end of the street near Kensington, where it was installed in early 2018 as one of 33 safe speed camera sites chosen nationwide based on crash risk analysis by independent traffic experts. It's been one of Dunedin's busiest cameras. In its first nine months, it racked up 5,329 tickets, second only to the Southern Motorway camera. And instead of declining as drivers caught on, ticket numbers actually jumped 121% between March and December of that first year. The street's mix of retail shops, residential homes, and heavy bus traffic makes the 50 km/h limit worth watching. In July 2020, two people were killed in a head-on crash with a truck further along King Edward Street near the Kensington Hotel.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Otago region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
