About This Location

Ngapipi Road connects the eastern suburbs to Tamaki Drive, and the intersection where they meet was once ranked the 10th most dangerous in all of New Zealand. Over 30,000 vehicles pass through daily, and poor visibility near the road's crest has been a persistent problem. A fatal crash in 2013 and a serious two-car collision in 2020 that put three people in hospital are just two of the recorded incidents here. Police installed the camera in 2016 after working with NZTA and local residents, and the public response was described as "overwhelmingly supportive." Auckland Transport followed up with a major intersection upgrade in 2017, adding traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, and new cycle lanes. But the road's safety issues aren't fully resolved. Auckland Transport is planning another round of improvements at the Ngapipi Road and Ngaiwi Street intersection for late 2026, targeting the same old problems: poor crest visibility, excessive speed, and drivers not giving way.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
