About This Location
Ostrich Road sits in Auckland's Franklin district, a rural stretch near the small town of Patumahoe between Pukekohe and Waiuku. The camera here became one of the most talked-about in the country after locals vandalised it in March 2024, with Facebook posts openly celebrating its downing. One anonymous Waiuku local told media that every motorist in the region would stick their hand up and claim they did it. The anger traces back to 2020, when speed limits on Franklin's rural roads were dropped from 100km/h to 80km/h, leading to a 300% jump in tickets on nearby Glenbrook Road and accusations of revenue gathering from a local councillor. But the camera's own numbers tell a different story. When it first went live, just 28% of drivers were following the posted limit. By June 2025, that figure had climbed to 97%. Police later revealed that cameras around Waiuku were "especially targeted" through 2024, with stands pushed over and one camera apparently shot with a firearm. Repairs across the area cost up to $120,000.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
