About This Location
This camera went in during 2018 as part of Phase 3 of the national $10m camera expansion, with NZ Police citing a high crash risk at this location based on independent analysis of fatal and injury crashes. It's easy to see why: the road is packed with cyclists, runners, and beachgoers, and has a history of serious incidents including a 2009 crash where a driver hit a group of 20 cyclists, fracturing one rider's skull. The camera briefly gained local fame in October 2018 when the Breast Cancer Foundation placed a large pink arrow sign directly beneath it for their Pink Star Walk event. The Foundation insisted "any highlighting of the speed camera was purely coincidental."

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
