About This Location
Wansbeck Street sits on SH1 at the southern entrance to Oamaru, and the long, wide, straight stretch of road has a way of tempting drivers to push past the 50km/h limit. It's a particular trap for those on the Christchurch-to-Dunedin run who don't realise they're passing through a residential area. The site was flagged as high crash risk by independent traffic experts before the fixed camera went in on 1 March 2018. It quickly became infamous. In its first four months it issued over 10,000 tickets and pulled in nearly $1 million in fines, earning it the nickname "the $1 million speed camera." That first full year racked up 25,946 violations and $2.25 million in revenue, making it the most prolific ticketer in Otago and Southland. But the camera does appear to be working: by 2024, the number of drivers caught had dropped by roughly half, even as overall traffic volumes increased.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Otago region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
