About This Location
The Waterview Tunnel is New Zealand's longest road tunnel at 2.4 km, and this camera sits in the southbound tube carrying traffic from SH16 towards SH20 and the airport. The 80 km/h limit is lower than the surrounding motorway because a high-speed crash in an enclosed three-lane tube could be catastrophic, and only 16 cross-passages connect the two tunnels for emergency evacuation. When the cameras first went live in July 2017, they caught drivers off guard. Almost 10,000 tickets worth $948,000 were issued in the first six weeks alone, and by early 2019 the total had ballooned past $9.7 million across all four tunnel cameras. The original entrance and exit cameras have since been physically removed, with enforcement now happening inside the tunnels themselves. The tunnel's actual crash record is surprisingly good: of 193 incidents attended by response crews in the tunnel's early years, only 10 were inside the tunnels and just three needed emergency services.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
