About This Location
The Waterview Tunnel is New Zealand's longest road tunnel at 2.4km, and it's earned a reputation as one of the country's top speed camera earners. In the first six weeks after the cameras went live in mid-2017, police issued nearly 10,000 tickets worth close to $1 million. That number ballooned to over $10 million in the tunnel's first two years. The 80km/h limit inside the tunnel drew real backlash from drivers, with thousands signing a petition to raise it to 100km/h. Waka Kotahi eventually bumped the surrounding motorway sections back up to 100km/h, but the limit inside the tunnel stayed put, in line with international standards for enclosed road tunnels. The cameras themselves have been moved inside the tunnel over the years and are now tucked behind the electronic speed signs, so don't count on spotting them easily.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
