About This Location
Rata Street is a busy four-lane corridor that carries a mix of public transport, freight, and local traffic through New Lynn. Between 2014 and 2019, the Rata Street and Ash Street corridor recorded 213 crashes, resulting in 3 deaths and 46 injuries. The camera went live in March 2018 as one of 33 new fixed cameras installed nationwide under the $10m static camera expansion programme, with police citing the area's high crash risk as the reason for its placement. In September 2020, a 23-year-old pedestrian was killed at a crossing on Rata Street after being struck by a vehicle. Auckland Transport later proposed a broader safety upgrade for the corridor, including raised safety tables at intersections, new signalised crossings, and improved street lighting. But the project drew criticism for leaving out protected cycling infrastructure, despite 84% of consultation respondents saying they felt unsafe riding on the route.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
