About This Location

Great North Road through New Lynn is one of Auckland's busiest corridors, carrying around 39,000 vehicles a day, and this camera sits on a long, straight stretch near Fruitvale Road that's earned a reputation for catching drivers out. Police have pointed out that the wide, straight road layout makes it easy for speed to creep up without you realising. There's good reason for it being here: 40 speed-related crashes were recorded in the area over a 10-year period, including two that were fatal. The camera was originally one of the old wet-film units but got upgraded to next-generation digital technology in 2014, making it one of Auckland's first six digital speed cameras. It can now monitor up to six lanes in both directions. The spot is near Fruitvale Road Train Station and Kelston Girls College, so there's a steady flow of pedestrians crossing the road too. At one point this camera racked up $1.23 million in fines, which the Western Leader called "notorious."

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
