About This Location

Mokoia is a tiny rural settlement of around 200 people, sitting on a straight stretch of SH3 about 10 km east of Hawera. The camera went live in mid-2018 as part of the NZ Police's $10 million rollout of 56 new digital safe speed cameras, placed at sites with the highest risk of speed-related crashes. It's easy to see why this spot made the list. The broader SH3 corridor between New Plymouth and Hawera recorded 11 deaths and 47 serious injuries in just five years (2019 to 2023), and a fatal two-vehicle crash at Mokoia in January 2025 killed one person and injured five more. Waka Kotahi has since completed 12 km of flexible median barriers and wide centrelines along parts of SH3 to reduce head-on collisions. But for this open road section through Mokoia, the camera remains the main speed intervention on what's otherwise a fast, quiet stretch of two-lane highway.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Taranaki region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
