About This Location
SH2 through Maramarua sits on the main Auckland-to-Tauranga corridor and carries up to 25,000 vehicles on peak holiday days. It's a stretch with a rough history. Between Pokeno and Mangatarata, Waka Kotahi recorded 214 crashes over a 10-year period, including 15 fatal and 16 serious injury crashes, most of them head-on collisions or vehicles running off the road. The camera went live in January 2018 as one of seven new fixed cameras in the Waikato district, all placed at sites flagged as high crash risk by independent traffic analysts. Parts of the highway had their speed limit dropped to 90km/h back in 2011 because of safety concerns, and a $278 million upgrade with median barriers and new road deviations has been in the works to tame the worst sections. But serious crashes keep happening here, including a fatal two-truck collision in November 2025.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
