About This Location
This intersection sits right where the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) off-ramp feeds traffic into Manukau's city centre, close to the train station, bus interchange, and MIT campus. It was one of New Zealand's first three red light camera locations, going live on 30 April 2015 after NZ Transport Agency analysis flagged it as high-risk. Across those three initial sites, 43 injury crashes had occurred in the preceding years, and 31 of them were directly caused by drivers running reds. The camera uses radar to track approaching vehicles and photographs anyone who crosses the stop line during a red phase. Crashes aren't rare here. In September 2020 a collision at this corner during the morning commute injured four people, and in December 2024 a fleeing driver exited the motorway via the Lambie Drive off-ramp and slammed into a parked truck, ending up in serious condition at Middlemore Hospital. Lambie Drive also carries dedicated bus lanes that are separately enforced by Auckland Transport cameras, so drivers in this area need to pay attention to more than just the traffic lights.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
