About This Location
Installed in late 2018 as part of a second batch of six red light cameras across Auckland, this camera was one of two placed on Great South Road (the other sits at Cavendish Drive nearby). Auckland Transport selected both sites based on safety risk. The stretch of Great South Road through Manukau is a busy commercial corridor near Westfield Manukau, and red light running along it has a grim track record. Between 2012 and 2017, Auckland recorded 92 fatal and serious injury crashes caused by drivers blowing through red lights, and this part of south Auckland saw its share. An earlier camera trial in Auckland from 2008 to 2010 showed a 43% drop in red light running and roughly a 63% decrease in related crashes, which made the case for a wider rollout. The cameras here were funded by Auckland's regional fuel tax, and from January 2019 all 12 of Auckland's red light cameras began enforcing simultaneously rather than on the old six-at-a-time rotation.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
