About This Location
This intersection ranks as the 14th highest-risk in the Auckland region for collective crash risk, and it's one of only two Auckland intersections with two red light cameras rather than one. The cameras went live around October 2018, but the location's worst incident came earlier. In January 2017, a driver fleeing police ran a red light here and slammed into another car, killing the fleeing driver and injuring seven others. A stolen vehicle crash at the same spot in June 2025 showed the problems haven't gone away. Both Great South Road and Cavendish Drive run at 60 km/h through what's effectively a town centre, with Manukau bus and train stations, shopping centres, and AUT's South Campus all nearby. Local advocates have called for speed reductions to 50 km/h or lower, arguing the current limit doesn't match the area's heavy foot traffic.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
