About This Location
Dairy Flat Highway is a 15km rural arterial between Albany and Silverdale that's earned a grim reputation over the years. Between 2014 and 2018, there were 160 crashes along this stretch, killing six people and seriously injuring 22 more. NZTA ranked it in the top 1% of roads needing safety investment. The speed limit was dropped from 100 km/h to 80 km/h in late 2018, and a $10 million roundabout went in at the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway intersection. But with around 25,000 vehicles using the road daily and baseline speeding rates hitting 73%, the camera was installed in mid-2023 as part of a nine-camera Auckland rollout. A local board member once summed it up: "Too many of us have a horror story to tell about Dairy Flat Highway."
