About This Location
Wainui Road runs through the residential suburb of Waiwhetu, passing Our Lady of the Rosary School and feeding into the only road over the hill to Wainuiomata. Police installed this fixed camera in October 2014 after 10 years of crash data showed 168 speed-related incidents along the road, including one fatal crash and 53 injury crashes (seven of them serious). The 50 km/h zone doesn't stop everyone from pushing it, and Waiwhetu is one of Lower Hutt's hotspots for pedestrian and cyclist crashes. When the camera was announced, then-Mayor Ray Wallace pushed back on the placement, but police said the site was chosen after consultation with Hutt City Council safety engineers, who raised no objections. The cameras further up on Wainuiomata Hill have been shot at, beaten, and sawn off over the years, but this one in the Waiwhetu flats has had a quieter life.

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Wellington region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
