About This Location

This camera sits on the Wellington motorway stretch of SH2 between Ngauranga and Petone, a busy arterial route that carries heavy commuter traffic and peaks around holiday periods. It went live on 23 December 2014 as one of 56 new fixed cameras placed at high-risk sites across New Zealand, selected after analysis of 10 years of crash data. Police placed it here specifically to slow drivers before they reach the Petone exit and the tight curve under the overbridge. Senior Sergeant Ian Martin noted at the time that "there are also a high number of cycle commuters sharing the road at this point," a concern that proved tragically justified when cyclist Brent Norriss was killed on this stretch in February 2020 after being hit by a driver checking their phone. The camera can monitor up to six lanes of traffic in both directions. In 2016 this section of SH2 became part of New Zealand's first smart motorway, with variable speed limits that adjust automatically based on traffic flow.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Wellington region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
