About This Location

McKenzie Road sits in Kingseat, a tiny rural community of about 500 people tucked between Karaka and Waiuku in Auckland's far south. It's dairy farms, lifestyle blocks, and long straight stretches of open road where drivers can easily creep well above the 80 km/h limit. Waka Kotahi chose this spot as one of nine new Auckland camera locations in 2023, citing speed survey data showing vehicles traveling 30 to 60 percent over the posted limit on these roads. The wider Kingseat area has a track record of bad crashes, including a fatal single-vehicle crash on Kingseat Road in late 2018 and a three-car collision months earlier that left one person in critical condition and two more seriously hurt. The camera hasn't been universally welcomed either. A post on the CheckpointNZ Facebook page showed it had been damaged at some point, and radar detector forums have debated whether the placement is genuinely about safety or revenue.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
