About This Location
This camera sits near Taumatamakuku, a small settlement of about 50 homes on the stretch of SH1 between Kawakawa and Moerewa. It's the result of a decade-long campaign by local residents who were tired of responding to crashes outside their front doors. Between 2018 and 2023, five people were killed and six seriously injured on this section of road, which includes three narrow bridges with limited visibility. A 2023 NZTA study found 40% of vehicles were breaking the 80km/h limit through the settlement. The camera was installed in 2023 but didn't start issuing tickets until mid-2024, partly because someone attacked it with a pick just days before activation. It was the first fixed speed camera in the Far North and the first in the country to get warning signage for approaching drivers.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Northland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
