About This Location

Awhitu Road cuts through rolling farmland on the Awhitu Peninsula, a quiet rural stretch southwest of Waiuku that leads toward Karioitahi Beach and the wild west coast. The road swoops between steep, conical hills with bends that have caught out more than a few drivers. A fatal head-on crash in February 2017 and a serious two-vehicle collision in December 2018 that left a teenager critically injured both happened along this stretch. The camera was installed as part of a 33-site national rollout targeting roads with a track record of deaths and serious injuries. It's a road used by locals, beachgoers heading to Karioitahi for surfing or paragliding, and farmers, so traffic can be an unpredictable mix of speeds and vehicle types.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
