About This Location

Sitting on SH1 between Settlement Road and Schiska Road just south of town, this camera went live in August 2018 as part of a $10 million national rollout targeting high-risk crash zones. The stretch earned its place on that list: between 2008 and 2012, 24% of the 40 recorded crashes here involved excess speed, nearly double the national average for similar highways. NZTA dropped the limit to 80 km/h through the Kauri to Springs Flat corridor back in 2015, but the camera added another layer of enforcement. It's racked up over 29,000 tickets and $2.7 million in fines since going operational. Serious crashes still pop up in the area, including a two-vehicle collision in late 2025 that sent a person to Auckland City Hospital by rescue helicopter.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Northland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
