About This Location
Pakuranga Road is one of east Auckland's busiest arterials, carrying over 21,000 vehicles a day, and this intersection with Pigeon Mountain Road cops a lot of that traffic. The red light camera here went live on 20 February 2015 as part of a batch of seven new Auckland cameras selected after NZTA analysis of high-risk intersections. Pigeon Mountain Road connects down to the Half Moon Bay ferry terminal, so afternoon peak traffic gets heavy enough that Auckland Transport installed metering signals further south in 2016 just to let residents turn out of side streets. Pakuranga Road itself has seen multiple serious and fatal crashes over the years, particularly involving motorcyclists at its various intersections. The speed limit along this stretch was dropped from 60km/h to 50km/h in early 2023, though it's now being pushed back up to 60. And with the AMETI Eastern Busway construction reshaping the road corridor between Panmure and Botany, traffic patterns through here have been shifting quite a bit.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
