About This Location

This is one of Auckland's more complex junctions, sitting right where Karangahape Road meets Ponsonby Road and becomes Great North Road. The Maori name for the ridge here is Te Rimu Tahi, "The Lone Rimu Tree," after an ancient tree that once stood at this very spot. It was one of the first six intersections in Auckland to get a red light camera, installed in late 2017 and switched on for enforcement in June 2018. Before the camera arrived, commenters on the Greater Auckland website were calling for one, noting red light runners "every cycle" on the right turn arrows along Ponsonby Road. An Auckland Transport survey backed that up, recording 39 cars running the red at this junction in just two days. The stretch of Great North Road heading west from here has seen 84 collisions between 2019 and 2023, with crashes clustering at intersections, and AT is now rolling out raised tables, kerb build-outs, and new signalised crossings to calm things down. In March 2024, a stolen vehicle ploughed into three cars waiting at the lights here before six youths fled on foot towards Karangahape Road.

How This Camera Works

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
