About This Location

Great North Road is Auckland's second-longest road and one of its busiest urban corridors, funnelling traffic between the CBD and West Auckland. The Grey Lynn stretch alone recorded 139 crashes between 2014 and 2019, with 11 causing serious injuries. Over 80% of those happened at intersections, and vulnerable road users took a real beating: 13 crashes involved motorcyclists, 7 involved pedestrians, and another 7 involved cyclists. The camera went live in late 2018 as part of the $10 million rollout of 33 new fixed cameras across the country. It hasn't stopped the serious incidents. In April 2024, two cars collided here at 3:35am, killing one person and seriously injuring two others. Auckland Transport is now rebuilding this section of the road with protected cycleways, raised pedestrian crossings, and upgraded bus lanes, partly because the surrounding area is zoned for 4-6 storey housing and the population is expected to grow about 24% by 2031.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
