About This Location
This intersection was one of the very first red light camera sites in New Zealand, going live on 30 April 2015 alongside just two other locations. It was also the first time radar-based detection technology had been used for red light enforcement in the country. Auckland Transport and NZTA picked the spot after analysis showed the three initial camera locations had collectively racked up 43 injury crashes in the preceding years, with 31 of those directly caused by red light running. Ti Rakau Drive carries around 30,000 vehicles a day, and one commenter on the Greater Auckland website summed up local feeling about the camera's arrival: "Long long long overdue." The nearby Ti Rakau Drive and Botany Road intersection saw a fatal crash in January 2019 when a driver doing 110 km/h in a 60 zone ploughed into a car stopped at a red light, killing the waiting driver. That crash led to a manslaughter conviction. The whole Ti Rakau Drive corridor is currently being reshaped by the Eastern Busway project, which is adding new bus lanes and signalised intersections through to Botany.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
