About This Location
Auckland Transport installed this red light camera in late 2019, one of eight new cameras added to high-risk intersections across the city. The timing wasn't coincidental. In January that year, 50-year-old Zhengwen "Alan" Hu was killed at this exact intersection while waiting at the lights, struck from behind by a driver doing roughly 110 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. That driver was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Ti Rakau Drive carries around 30,000 vehicles a day and feeds directly into the Botany Town Centre area, making this a consistently busy junction. The Eastern Busway project is currently reshaping Ti Rakau Drive with major construction works, so expect traffic patterns and lane layouts to keep shifting here through 2027.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
