About This Location

This intersection sits right beside Glenfield Mall on Auckland's North Shore, and it's one of the busier junctions in the area. Glenfield Road carries around 19,900 vehicles a day, with Kaipatiki Road adding another 10,800. In 2017, a car ran the red light here and slammed into a stationary bus and a group of pedestrians, injuring three people. Auckland Transport has classified it as high-risk because of the heavy traffic combined with constant foot traffic from mall shoppers, and for a long time there weren't even proper crossing facilities at the free left-turn lanes into the mall. AT has since planned upgrades including zebra crossings on the mall slip lanes, traffic islands, and wider footpaths at all corners. Red light running has been a persistent problem across the North Shore, and this camera helps keep drivers honest at an intersection where the consequences of running a light can be serious.

How This Camera Works

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
