About This Location

West Coast Road is one of Glen Eden's main arterial routes, running right through the town centre past shops and the railway station with heavy pedestrian traffic. It's earned a rough crash record. Between 2014 and 2019, there were 7 serious and 23 minor injury crashes on the stretch between Captain Scott Road and Glendale Road alone. Auckland Transport poured $5 million into safety improvements here, including raised speed tables, new signalised crossings, and the removal of slip lanes at intersections, with Waka Kotahi picking up 75% of the tab. The speed limit stays at 50 km/h, but the raised platforms are designed to force vehicles down to 30 km/h or less at crossing points. Crashes keep happening though. In September 2025, a two-vehicle collision near Rosier Road left one person in serious condition and shut down the road.

How This Camera Works

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
