About This Location
The Ellerslie Residents Association has labelled this spot "NZ's Most Dangerous Intersection," and the crash history backs that up. Two schools sit within half a kilometre, and Great South Road through here carries around 26,000 vehicles a day. In June 2023, a pedestrian was struck and killed on Great South Road during the morning rush hour. Then in September 2025, a woman died in a two-vehicle head-on after witnesses watched a car fly down the wrong side of Main Highway at speed. It's a 50 km/h zone packed with cafes and shops right in Ellerslie village, so foot traffic is heavy. The red light camera here is one of the longer-standing ones in Auckland, and forum posts on radar detector sites describe it as "well established." But given the area's track record, it's hard to argue the enforcement isn't warranted.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
