About This Location
This camera went live in February 2015 as one of seven new red light camera sites across Auckland, picked from a shortlist of 75 intersections based on crash-reduction potential. Te Irirangi Drive is a major arterial carrying tens of thousands of vehicles a day through East Tamaki and Flat Bush, and this intersection has a rough history. One nearby resident told the NZ Herald that crashes happen here every three or four months, and that's been the pattern for over a decade. Lowering the speed limit to 60 km/h didn't seem to help. In March 2026, a child died after a car slammed at speed into two vehicles stopped at the red light here, mounting the footpath and going airborne before impact. Four others were injured.

How This Camera Works
This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
