About This Location
MacLaggan Street runs through Dunedin's central commercial area, past Harvey Norman and The Warehouse, and the camera here sits on a downhill stretch where the AA noted average speeds were consistently above the limit. It went live in March 2018 as one of three fixed cameras installed across Dunedin, alongside the Southern Motorway at Burnside and King Edward Street in South Dunedin. In its first nine months it caught 2,826 speeding drivers, making it the second-busiest of the three (the Motorway camera topped the list by a wide margin). That's stayed roughly consistent over the years. In the first nine months of 2024, it recorded 1,580 offences, still sitting in second place. Police ran a three-week warning period before the fines started, sending letters to speeders instead of tickets, and said the initial spike in offences dropped as drivers got used to the camera being there.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Otago region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
