About This Location
Dome Valley has earned the grim nickname "The Killing Fields" for good reason. Between 2000 and 2018, this 15 km stretch of winding SH1 between Warkworth and Wellsford claimed 36 lives and left 102 people seriously injured, with most crashes caused by drivers crossing the centreline or running off the road on its steep, foggy bends. The speed limit was dropped from 100 to 80 km/h back in 2007, and Waka Kotahi spent nearly $80 million on safety upgrades from 2019 onwards, adding median barriers, wider shoulders, and turn bays. Those changes have made a real difference. Since March 2022, there haven't been any road closures from major crashes on the improved section. But the camera's still catching plenty of people. In the first half of 2024, it issued 12,930 tickets worth $905,330, making it New Zealand's second-highest earning speed camera behind only one in Wellington.

This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Auckland region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
