About This Location
Cambridge Road is a rural two-lane road running between Te Awamutu and Cambridge through flat Waikato dairy country, and it's got a tricky quirk. The road sits on deep peat soils that shrink and crack after dry summers, creating bumps and ruts bad enough that Waipa District Council has temporarily dropped the speed limit to 80 km/h while repairs are done. The council actually names Cambridge Road as one of its most affected peat roads. That uneven surface, combined with a 100 km/h open road limit, has contributed to a rough crash record. A motorcyclist died on this stretch in 2016, and in June 2025 a car driver was killed in a collision with a truck between Storey and Cox Roads. The camera was installed around mid-2018 as one of seven new fixed cameras rolled out across the Waikato, all placed at locations identified by independent traffic experts as having high crash risk.

How This Camera Works
This is a fixed spot speed camera that measures your instantaneous speed as you pass using radar technology. If your speed exceeds the posted limit, the camera captures an image of your vehicle and number plate. Spot speed cameras are the most common type across the Waikato region and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
