About This Location
Pakuranga Road is one of east Auckland's busiest arterials, carrying over 21,000 vehicles a day through a corridor that's seen its share of serious crashes over the years. The intersection with Aviemore Drive ranked 44th on Greater Auckland's list of the city's highest-risk urban intersections, based on NZTA crash data. Aviemore Drive alone recorded 36 crashes between 2018 and 2022, two of them fatal. In August 2019, a drunk driver killed his passenger after crashing on Aviemore Drive in Highland Park, and a second fatality followed in 2021 when a car hit a tree nearby. Red light running has been a persistent problem across east Auckland. A dashcam once caught an Auckland Transport bus blowing through a red on Pakuranga Road at the Cascades Road intersection, narrowly missing two children at a crossing. The red light camera here is part of Auckland Transport's broader rollout that began in 2018, with plans for 42 cameras at high-risk intersections over the following decade.

This is a red light camera located at a signalised intersection in the Auckland region. It uses induction loops buried in the road to detect vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red. Red light cameras help reduce the severity of intersection crashes, which often result in serious injuries.
